| Do you like your job? What you do? I think it's pretty important to enjoy your occupation since you spend at least 8 hours a day M - F (40hrs a week) doing it.
I don't think I like my job much. I can tolerate it, but I defitnitely do not like it. Sometimes I experience moments where I can barely tolerate it. But then I take some deep breaths and I go back to tolerating it again.
You're probably wondering what it is that I do? It's quite boring actually. Probably one of the reasons why I don't like it that much. When people ask me what it is that I do, I try not to get into the details b/c I don't want them to know that I'm really not doing anything important. It's just something that has to be done. I work in the financial industry at a mutual fund company. It's the largest mutual fund company in the US, with over 300 billion under management, I believe. It's a good solid company. Most people here are relatively friendly and have pretty normal lives, with families to support ect... I work in operations and don't have to deal with clients. That's one good thing about this job. I am an associate 2 in the Pricing dept on the Equity side. (I got promoted towards the beginning of this year after a year and a half, hence the 2) What does that mean exactly? My day to day consists of monitoring the world markets for exceptions. That's a popular word in my group. "Exceptions." I must hear and say that word like a million times a day. Basically anything out of the ordinary that would affect the price of an equity asset that my company owns. This could include volatility in the market that can cause stock prices to move, any suspension or halt of trading, any new issues that haven't started trading in the markets, and corporate actions that affect any of the securities we own. There's definitely more that we consider an exception, but those are the basics. So far, does this sound interesting? Then there's extraordinary issues that come up dealing with how to value securities that don't trade for whatever reason and also working on a model that deals with market timing, which is a juicier topic. But I haven't played a major role on any more important projects so far, which could also be one of the reasons for my boredom and lack of interest. In this department, they like you to start slowly. I don't think that's the way it is in every dept in this company. It mainly has to do with management, which is a whole other xanga entry. The management of this group is also a prime reason for me not being happy in this position. (I'll expand later in another entry).
Based only on my day to day duties, I find my job to be quite mundane and monotonous. I'm sure a lot of people out there can relate. I can truly say that the only reason I'm working here is b/c of monetary compensation. I don't get any pleasure from accomplishing my tasks nor do I enjoy most of the people I work with. Don't worry though, I'm not going to be one of those people that just sit and complain about their jobs. I'm doing something about it. I'm studying every spare time I get (besides this moment, since I wasted like 15 mins writing this xanga entry), so I can get myself out of this hell hole position.
For those of you out there who don't like what you do either, please do yourself a favor and do something about it. I know there are people out there who truly enjoy their jobs and even find meaning in what it is they do. I respect that and hope to get there one day too.
